Gabriel Gutierrez
Nominated by Rebecca Gutierrez
For over 50 years, Brighton Open Market has been a buzzing community hub on the city’s London Road. And over the past 18 months, Gabriel Gutierrez has become one of its biggest personalities. The proud owner of Casa Azul Mexican restaurant, he has worked hard to build his business from scratch. In fact, his energy and sincerity is an inspiration to every single customer and trader.
Gabriel moved to Britain from Mexico and is proud of his roots, sharing the vibrancy of his culture wherever he goes. But more than this, he is always looking for ways to give back to the local community. For instance, this year he partnered with the Brighton Housing Trust to launch the ‘Hanging Taco Initiative’. During this time, many customers donated meals to people in need, who were then invited into the restaurant to dine.
When the pandemic started and Casa Azul had to close, Gabriel refused to feel sorry for himself. Instead, he walked the length and breadth of Brighton delivering hot meals to struggling families, making lockdown a little easier for many. With his passion for food and his compassion for people, Gabriel is a true gift to the local community.
