Sue Mechen
Nominated by Sabrina Quaino
Described as ‘a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day’, Sue Mechen has made a difference to Brighton & Hove in a variety of ways. A school kitchen assistant known for her songs, smiles and listening ear, she never stops being busy in her spare time as well.
Seven years ago, Sue noticed that while local boys had a football team there was nothing for local girls. For this reason, she founded the Tantrum community dance groups for 6 to 16 year old girls. Despite being told that it was impossible to create an affordable dance group, Sue turned it into a big success, making dance accessible. Nowadays, Sue is still the Project Leader, and as well as running the club she also bakes birthday cakes for everyone in the dance group.
If that wasn’t enough, Sue is also a director at the East Brighton Food Co-operative, cooking and delivering meals to people in need. She even did her part in raising funds for the charity with a sponsored diet too.
Sue is a passionate Albion fan, never missing a single match. In fact, she is such a big supporter that she even named her daughter ‘Macyalbion’. Somehow, Sue manages to spread joy wherever she goes, whether that’s encouraging dance or giving a hot meal to a person in need.
